Xavi Alonso reacted to the massive celebration he displayed that almost got him injured following Bayer Leverkusen's comeback victory over RB Leipzig.

What happened?

Bayer Leverkusen traveled to the Red Bull Arena to take on RB Leipzig on Saturday, January 20.

Leverkusen's head coach, Xabi Alonso did not have the services of his striker Victor Boniface, who was ruled out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations because of an injury.

However, the German club managed to secure a late 3-2 victory thanks to goals from Nathan Tella, Jonathan Tah, and Piero Hincapie.

The late comeback winner made Xabi Alonso remember his playing days and celebrate wildly which almost got him injured.

After the match, the former Real Madrid midfielder described Piero Hincapie's injury-time winner as an explosion of happiness.

The win took Leverkusen seven points clear of second-placed Bayern Munich, although the German champions have two games in hand.

Speaking to reporters about the match, he said; "It was such an intense game when you see that anything can happen, when you have a last-minute goal, you celebrate".

He added; "It's an explosion of happiness. You share it with your players, your teammates, your staff."

It was the second weekend in a row that Leverkusen had succeeded in injury time with Argentinian World Cup winner Exequiel Palacios scoring in lost time in a 1-0 victory against Augsburg last Saturday.

Leverkusen are the only European team who remains unbeaten this season in all competitions with 24 wins and three draws in 27 games.

What's next for Bayer Leverkusen?

Xabi Alonso and his men will continue their impressive campaign when they host Borussia Monchengladbach at Bay Arena stadium on Saturday, January 27.
